Cllr. Williams denouncing patriarchy
Ward 8 Councillor Mimi Williams is calling upon all women to stand up and speak out against patriarchy. Williams was speaking in an exclusive interview with Khwezi Times as the first female Councillor in Ward 8 since the demarcation. Williams points out that societal issues such sexism, gender inequality, violence against women, and patriarchy are forces holding back societies from transforming. She adds: “
As women we must move away from thinking we just belong in the kitchen and doing domestic duties only”. Williams believes that its time for more women to take lead in corporate boardrooms, political arena, and in government. “We’ve seen improvements but we need more women to take up leadership positions” she explains.
In her ward, she intends to involve more young people in the process of planning, budgeting, and implementation of her ward programs. She admits more still needs to be done in terms of development not only in her ward, but in Zwelethemba. “As Zweletans we need to be together and united when development is concerned and put our petty politics aside” says Williams.
She also revealed that more development is to be expected in Zwelethemba especially the long awaited swimming pool, which has been on the Integrated Development Plan (IDP) for years. “Its high-time for locals to gear themselves with the necessary skills in order to benefit on these forthcoming development projects” she concludes.
